Create an STL file

Once you have modelled your design using a CAD program you need to export it as an STL file. An STL (Standard Tessellation Language) is a very basic CAD file that only stores the surface geometry of a three-dimensional object without any representation of color, texture or other common CAD model attributes. STL files are the standard for the 3D printing industry (a bit like jpegs are for images).

Most 3D CAD modelling programs will allow you to directly export an STL file ready for 3D printing. If yours does not, there are a few free programs that will convert other CAD files to STL available on the web.

IMPORTANT: CAD model must be a solid before you try and export as an STL file. See design guidelines  for more details.

Please email us if you are having problems creating an STL file, or need one converting from another format.
